Beginning of L2L project

Monday 15th of October

Today the 15th of October I was given a project to work on which will run up until the end of semester 1 which is December.
.
The project was an animation project in which we have to research and explore an artist and artwork of your own choice. When you have chosen an artist or artist piece which you like or have interest in the next stage is to create a 2D or 3D piece using for example some of the following, photography, collage ,drawing or clay models. You can either use one of these methods or another one that you developed and researched yourself. After the exploration and research is done we have to produce a minimum of 15 - 20 frames which will be part of a stop motion animation piece.

The 6 Week Time Frame:
Week 1 and 2 - Researching, gathering and exploring.
Week 3:  Making drawings and creating storyboards.
Week 4 and 5: Working from storyboards and drawings work out frames and construction.
Week 6: Photograph work for animation, enter the work into software (Microsoft movie maker) and choose audio.
Week 7: Presentation of animation project.

Debate

On Monday the 8th of October we had been given a option of doing a debate between or group on the 15th of October. We had to choose a topic ourselves and decided on the concept based on Russel brands comment "Is it wrong to be abstinent into taking methadone".

We the split the group up into two teams in which there was a for team and an against team. The team I was put on was the against team. I found this to be the easier side to be on as I was against Russell brands concept as soon as we decided on the topic.

Debate topic:
"Is it wrong to be abstinent into taking methadone"

For the week of 8th October till the 15th of October we had to research the topic and find out information about it and have strong arguments to make towards the other team. For me the reason I was against the idea of methadone be cut out and the idea of people coming off drugs without using it is in my opinion not a good idea. Methadone is like a prevention from people going back on drugs and is a way of tricking the body to thinking the person is still taking drugs, so the side effects of with drawl can be avoided and eased.

On the day of the debate there was very good arguments from both teams but one that really caused alot of questions from both sides. This argument was that poverty plays a major role in drugs and drug consumption. If people are poor most of the time they will resort to drugs and if they become abstinent then what life have they to return to, Poverty is the motivation to taken drugs. As part of the against team we argued that Russel Brand cannot fix this problem and by making people go off methadone altogether. as this in itself a very bad idea. There is a better chance of people staying off drugs if they are put on a program which involves methadone than people who are going straight off drugs and taking nothing. We felt also because of Russel Brands history with drugs and his previous record his advice isn't as valuable as he may think. He has been through rehabilitation and has walked out so in my opinion I feel he has not given the system a chance and so therefore again his advice is false and misconceived. He has been through using methadone and it hasn't worked cause he hasn't used it correctly.

His celebrity status and money means that he would have had the funds there to help him afford rehabilitation and extra help if needed but he didn't take the opportunity when it was there and so relapsed again and again, bringing him straight back to the starting point. Not everybody has the funds or financial support like he had to be doing rehabilitation over and over again. People who is perhaps in poverty have one chance to recover if there lucky and so this brings me back to the point of Russel Brand not having the authority to say what to do also the point that poverty also has a big role to play in drugs and drug use.

In my opinion the debate was very good as you got to see it from two points of view and I did think that the people on the for team had a tough job trying to change our teams opinion of the topic. The debate was interesting and I enjoyed it and liked getting my opinion across to people and letting them see my point of view so overall would like to do debates in the future.

Research of given artist

Task:
I was given an assignment last week the 1st of October to create a mindmap based on an artist given by my lecturer. We had to use the library as our main research method and we werent allowed to use the internet.

The artist I was given was Francis Bacon. I had already known a bit about Francis Bacon's and his work but it was interesting to research him in much greater detail.

The books that I found to be of use were:

  1. Francis Bacon written by Laurence Gowing and Sam Hunter.
  2. Francis Bacon written by John Russell.
  3. Francis Bacon in conversation with Michael Archimbaud. Phaidon is written on the cover.

Francis Bacons Background:
Francis Bacon was born in 28th of October 1909 in Dublin. He was one of five kids, he moved alot back and forth from Dublin and England as his father worked in a war office. He never attended schooling and as a child he experienced alot of human strangeness through his family. This could be what his paintings are related to.

Mindmap:
I decided to put my focus on one work belonging to Francis Bacon. The name of this piece of artwork was THREE STUDIES FOR FIGURES AT THE BASE OF THE CRUCIFIXION.

This is the image of his work, The three studies for figures at the base of the crucifixion which i done myself for my mindmap.

The reason I chose to do the mind-map in a window type form is because Francis Bacon didn't always have these paintings part of a series and were hung by themselves. Each window slot can be open one at a time so the viewer can experience the paintings on there own. I also have a larger window which can be open up so the viewer can also view the work as a collection.

Left Picture

This picture depicts a human form a mourner at the cross. The creature has thick hair like a female and also a jailbird. At the shoulder level there is what looks to be wing stumps. The creature has a very elongated neck but has no mouth. The creature is sitting on a metal stool looking limbless having no legs attached to its body.

Centre Picture

This image the creature almost looks like a dis featured and a distorted ostrich. Around the elongated neck of this creature there is a bandage. The mouth is wide opened with sharp teeth which makes the viewer feel like it is snarling at them. The creature is looking directly at the viewer even though it has no eyes.

Right Figure

The right figure is very similar to the central  figure. this creature also has an elongated neck but accept the bandage is removed compare to the centre image. What looks like a leg is coming down from  the body into a furry like material which is said to be a sofa leg.

Three images as a collection:

The works were first exhibited in 1945 in Lefevre Gallery. The room they were situated in was very low ceilinged, windowless and oddly proportioned. The paintings were regarded as freaks and as monsters and they really unsettled viewers. People were requesting them to be taken down and removed from the gallery because they caused such large controversy. These three images were painted by using oil paints and also pastels on fibre board. The creatures are painted on a flat orange background with pallid flesh tones, this was achieved by the overlaying of grey and white brushstrokes. The figures are done in the colours yellow, green, white and purple. All paintings backgrounds look very similar with the orange but in fact the right image is slightly brighter than the other two on its left.

My opinion of Francis Bacons work:
In my opinion I did not like Francis Bacons work. The techniques he used interested me more than the pictures themselves.I just found the images too daunting and unflattering to look at. I really likes the way he combined two mediums between the oil paint and pastels and would perhaps experiment with these in my own artwork. All the colours in the picture do in a way complement eachother and so this interested me and has given me ideas, so even though I didn't overall like his pieces or the creatures he depicted I did learn things from his work which are beneficial.
